The Theory of Everything (2014)

Storyline:

Stephen and Jane are a adorable couple. Stephen is a brillIant man but finds out he has an degenerative disease.

Main Characters:

  1. STEPHEN - (hero)
  2. BRIAN (ally)
  3. JANE (goddess)
  4. DENNIS (mentor)
  5. JONATHAN (enemy/ally)

Milestones (FIRST ACT):

  1. Ordinary World: Stephen is a PhD student of Oxford and the cleverest one.
  2. Meeting the Goddess: He meets Jane in a party and they fall in love at first sight.
  3. Making Ally: Stephen has a roommate, Brian.
  4. Meeting the Mentor/Call for Adventure (00:18:00): Stephen is the only who finishes Prof. Dennis task. He invites Stephen to go to London with him and watch a special lecture.

Milestones (SECOND ACT):

  1. Crossing the First Threshold (00:25:00): Stephen starts a math equation to his search about space-time wrap and black holes. He falls and finds out he has a physical disease that disturbs his movements.
  2. Making Ally/Meeting the Goddess (00:35:00): Jane says to Stephen she loves him. She kisses him.
  3. Set of Trials (00:38:00): Stephen decides the theme of his research. The father of Stephen sits down with Jane to talk about the future life of Stephen. Stephen and Jane get married. His disease evolves very fast. Stephen becomes a Doctor, his theory is approved by the board of professors. Stephen clearly suffers because of his disabilities. He has a hard time to hide it from everyone else. Jane brings him a wheelchair. Stephen has a new idea about the black holes. Stephen gives a lecture about the beginning and end of the universe. People agree with Stephen and he receives a standing ovation. Stephen publishes a book about his theory.
  4. Crossing the Second Threshold (00:56:00): Stephen is successful and the kids has grown up. Jane however does not have time or silence to keep her studies. She looks tired and a bit upset.
  5. Meeting the Mentor (Jane) (01:00:00): Jane's mother asks her to join the church choir.
  6. Making Ally (Jane) (01:02:00): Jane meets the music teacher of the church, Jonathan, and decides to join the group.
  7. Making Enemies (01:03:00): The teacher gives her son piano lessons. He doesn't like the teacher and there is a conflict at the dine table.
  8. Making Ally (01:10:00): For Jane's sake Stephen becomes friends with Jonathan.
  9. Belly of the Whale (01:15:00): The third child of Jane and Stephen is born. People think it is Jonathan's so he leaves. She says to Jonathan she has feelings for him. The relationship of Stephen and Jane is not the same anymore.
  10. Approaching the Inmost Cave (01:23:00): Stephen goes to the church and asks Jonathan for help. Jonathan takes Jane and the kids for camping and Stephen travels with his friends to France. Stephen splits blood and is taken by the ambulance from the opera house. Jane receives a call saying Stephen is in a coma.
  11. Love in the Underworld (01:26:00): The doctor offers Jane to turn off the equipment that keeps Stephen alive. She says no and asks Jonathan to step back in their lives.
  12. Belly of the Whale (01:28:00): Stephen survives but he can't speak anymore. They try the spelling board but they are both devastated.
  13. Making Ally/ Enemy (Jane) (01:32:00): Jane gets the help of Elaine, a nurse/therapist to assist her with Stephen's new situation. He gets a sound board to his chair and gets intimate with Elaine. Jane is jealous.
  14. Belly of the Whale (01:36:00): He learns to control the new board and decides to write a book about time. Jane gets happy that Stephen admitted the existence of God in a sort of way and he tells her that he invited Elaine to go with him to America. She cries. They break up.
  15. Resurrection and Elixir (01:46:00): She goes to the church to see Jonathan. They kiss.
  16. The Ultimate Boon (01:48:00): He gets famous and goes on stage to answer fans' questions. He dreams of standing up. He gives a speech.

Milestones (THIRD ACT):

  1. Reward/Freedom to Live/Magic Flight (01:53:00): Stephen invites Jane to meet the Queen of England. They talk about their lives and children. Time goes back to the moment they first met at the party. The text says they are still friends, have grandchildren and are happy.
Final Feedbacks:

So many ups and downs! In terms of traditional structure this one does not follow much. I called points 09-12-14 Belly of the Whale because of a lack of terms to name them. This is a hard question for me to answer in this movie.
After the first half of the film (point 4) it seems that Jane becomes the protagonist.The hero role gets upside down. 
It seems to me that the goal of Stephen is to prove his theory and make Jane happy. The first aim gets lost during the second act when Jane get's in the spotlight.
