Unbroken (2014)

Storyline:

After a near-fatal plane crash in WWII, Olympian Louis Zamperini spends a harrowing 47 days in a raft with two fellow crewmen before he's caught by the Japanese navy and sent to a prisoner-of-war camp.

​​Milestones (FIRST ACT):

  1. Ordinary World: (Present Timeline) Louis is an American soldier in a military plane during World War II. (Flashback) Louis is an Italian-American kid who lives in a Christian community. He has a secret hidden box and bullies who beat him up. At home he has strict parents who punish him.
  2. Meeting the Mentor/Call to Adventure (00:14:00): (Flashback) His brother, Pete, sees potential on him and train him to join the track team. The brother believes he can but he does not.
  3. Set of Trial (00:16:00): (Flashback) He runs better and better and turns to be a great runner. Louis is invited to join the Olympics try out in Tokyo. He says goodbye to Pete.
  4. Ordinary World (00:20:00): (Present Timeline) Louis' squad lands. Louis still manages to take his running practices during the war.
  5. Call to Adventure (00:24:00): (Present Timeline) The team receives a rescue mission

Milestones (SECOND ACT):

  1. Crossing the Threshold (00:27:00): (Flashback) Louis is in Germany to compete at the Olympics. He breaks the record. (Present Timeline) Louis' squad lands on water after a near-fatal plane crash. Louis, Mac and Phil survive.
  2. Set of Trials (00:37:00): They become castaway. Later they try to get the attention of an airplane but they don't succeed. They kill a pelican but can't eat it. Therefore they use it as bait for fishing and eat a raw fish. They survive a storm and catch a shark with their bare hands. A plane finally shows up, but it attacks them and they have to swim in shark waters. The boat get filled with holes that they must cover. Mac eventually passes away.
  3. Crossing the Second Threshold (01:00:00): Phil and Louis are captured by Japanese troops. Phil is tortured.
  4. Set of Trial (01:03:00): Louis meets a Japanese General who questions him about troops in Hawaii. Louis does not know the answer of any of the questions. The General knows he is a Olympic athletic. Louis and Phil are left with no food, tortured, separated and wearing a blindfold they are taken away to Tokyo.
  5. Making Enemy (01:13:00): Louis is hit by Watanabe. He and the American troop are forced to stay standing still during day and night.
  6. Making Ally (01:16:00): During the night Louis meet the other American soldiers: Tinker, Miller and Anthony.
  7. Set of Trial (01:18:00): Wantanabe forces Louis to run against a Japanese soldier and he loses because he is too weak. He and the troop do labor work for days while they secretly send each other messages. The ones who are caught with the messages however are tortured and killed.
  8. Love in the Underworld (01:28:00): The Japaneses take Louis to the Radio Station so he can announce a message home, to his family.
  9. Set of Trial (01:32:00): The Japaneses offer him to lie about America on the radio and get out of the work camp. Louis chooses not to do it and return. In the camp Watanable orders every American soldier to punch Louis in the face.
  10. Approaching The Inmost Cave (01:43:00): The camp is attacked during the night. If the Allies win the war the captured soldiers will be killed. They don't know what they should wish for. In the next morning the soldiers are taken away to another base camp.

Milestones (THIRD ACT):

  1. Set of Trial (01:48:00): They are forced to work in the coal extraction. Some of them die during the labor.
  2. Belly of the Whale (01:51:00): The work is interrupted by Watanable who announces that Roosevelt is dead. The hopes are almost done. One of the Japanese push Louis and he sprains his foot. Louis is as tired as never before.
  3. Resurrection with the Elixir (01:55:00): Wantanabe orders Louis to lift a heavy piece of wood over his head for hours. All his friends cheer for him and give him support. Louis gets stronger and looks into Wantanabe eyes who beats him up.
  4. Freedom to Live (02:02:00): The war is over and every prisoner is sent to the river where they think they will die but an American airplane comes from the sky to rescue them. They may go back home. Louis visits Wantanabe's room and sees a picture of him with his father. Louis arrives in America, kisses the ground and hugs his relatives. During the black screen titles says that Louis forgave the Japanese soldiers who harmed him, including Wantanabe. He went to Japan and ran holding the torch for the Olympics at age 80.
